Undergraduate Research Opportunities

• The National Science Foundation funds Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU).  A list of programs can be found by clicking .  These are typically 6-8 week programs where a student is inserted into a research problem.  Often times students are able to present their work at the national joint meeting of the American Mathematical Society (AMS) and Mathematical Association of America (MAA) held every January.
   
• The , Mathematical Sciences Research Institute Undergraduate Program, funded by the NSA and the NSF REU program, is now in its 3rd year. MSRI-UP is a comprehensive program for undergraduates whose primary aim is to increase the number of students from underrepresented groups in mathematics graduate programs. MSRI-UP includes summer research opportunities, mentoring, workshops on the graduate school application process, and follow-up support.
  • Trains undergraduates in mathematical research through a six-week summer program at MSRI in Berkeley, CA.
  •  Provides participating students opportunities to present their research at national conferences in the year following the summer program.
  • Introduces participating students to a network of mentors through national societies known for their mentoring activities and professional support for students.
  • Guides students in the process of applying to graduate programs and fellowships.

Summer Programs that are not research oriented

• Carleton College Summer Math Program for Women Undergraduates

  This is a four week intensive program at Carleton College in Minnesota which includes classes and colloquiums.  This program is for women who have completed their first or second year of college who have had the Calculus sequence and Linear Algebra.

   

• SPWM, Summer Program for Women in Mathematics

  This is a five week intensive program at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., which includes several classes, guest speakers, panel discussions, field trips, and a lot of food!  Typically, candidates are between their Junior and Senior year and have had both Real Analysis and Modern Algebra.  I am a former SPWM participant and could give more information as needed.

Semester Programs

There are several options for students who wish to spend a semester or a year studying at a different institution. 

• Students spend 15 weeks in Moscow studying mathematics in English.  Scholarships are available from the NSF.

Students in their junior or senior year can spend one to two semesters in Budapest studying mathematics in English.

Post-Baccalaureate Opportunities

• , Enhancing Diversity in Graduate Education

This summer program is funded by the NSF and Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and is only open to women.  The program involves two courses, one in analysis and the other in algebra/linear algebra.  In addition to the main courses, students will take minicourses, attend guest lectures, and have visitors from academia and industry.  The program also includes a rich long-term mentoring program.  The program includes a stipend plus room and board.  Applications are usually due at the end of February or very early March. 

This program, funded by the NSF, is for women with bachelor's degrees who did not major in mathematics or whose mathematics major was light.  The intent is help women determine whether they want to continue their mathematical training at the graduate level.  Full tuition and a living stipend is available.  Smith College is in Massachusetts.  The preferred deadline for January entrance is October 15 and for September entrance is March 15, but applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.
