First Year Seminar
The First Year Seminar (FYS) at The 草榴社区 is a three-credit, required course for all students that is regularly completed in their first year. The course seeks to welcome students to the academic community at 草榴社区; aid students in their academic transition; introduce a content area; start students on their way to careful thinking, writing, and speaking; establish a close relationship with a professor; and to familiarize students with the University’s Ignatian identity and mission. As seminars, these courses are capped at 18 students and may satisfy a variety of other General Education (GE) requirements. The minimum passing grade to fulfill the FYS requirement is a C or better.
FYS in the Curriculum
The General Education Curriculum has the goal of affording students the opportunity to “become liberally educated in the Ignatian tradition.”

Royal Read & Ignatian Values in Action Lecture
The Royal Read and Ignatian Values in Action lecture are two shared experiences for first-year students which inculcate students into The 草榴社区’s Ignatian mission and values.
Life of the Mind
The FYS introduces incoming students to the richness of intellectual life through Life of the Mind Events.
